Donald Trump, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr agree to testify in investigation into former president’s business practices | US News
Donald Trump and his two children, Ivanka Trump and Donald Trump Jr. have agreed to testify in a New York state civil investigation into the former US president’s business practices.
State Attorney General Letitia James is investigating whether the Trump Organization misled its lenders and tax authorities.
The settlement comes more than six months after Ms James first subpoenaed for their testimony, which Mr. Trump, 75, and his children, both in their 40s, have fiercely fought over in court.
Last month, an intermediate appeals court rejected Trump’s attempt to avoid giving testimony.
The Trumps have argued that testifying in the civil investigation would violate their constitutional rights because their words could be used in a related crime investigation led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg leader.
Their testimony, which began July 15, could last until next week, according to an agreement with Ms James released on Wednesday.
The Trump family company’s longtime chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, was charged with tax fraud in a Manhattan investigation last year.
He has pleaded not guilty and will be put on trial later this year.
Mr. Trump, a Republican, has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation politically motivated because James is a Democrat.
Last month, a federal judge in the state capital, Albany, dismissed a separate lawsuit filed by Trump seeking to halt the investigation on the grounds that she was politically biased.
The judge found no evidence that she had acted unwholesomely.
Trump has until June 13 to ask New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, to delay any further testimony in the James investigation.
