Dogs crave homes but adopters give the same excuses

While many dogs face common challenges, prejudice often exacerbates their plight. This was felt acutely by one elderly pit bull in Los Angeles, California, who was viewed as “damaged goods” by potential adopters. Eeyore, an elderly dog, was rescued from a euthanasia shelter by Philozoia, a Los Angeles-based animal welfare organization. The organization shared the dog’s story on Facebookrave about his qualities. “He is crate and house trained, is great with kids, and would make a great family dog. Eeyore loves attention and naps, and he has a playful nature. He loves toys and takes his stuffed animals everywhere,” they shared. Despite these glowing descriptions, finding Eeyore a forever home proved to be more difficult than expected, and even a foster home proved difficult to find.

However, Eeyore’s story eventually reached Harshey, a young woman who was so moved by his plight that she decided to foster him. From her home, she shared his story widely, hoping to connect with more potential adopters. Harshey was TikTok to share a video of Eeyore’s challenges. “An old dog with severe scarring and asthma is considered damaged goods to most adopters. But Eeyore has been nothing but brave and kind since I picked him up tonight,” she captioned the video, which highlighted the scars on his body and his response to being petted.

The video has sparked a wave of responses from viewers who have been moved by Eeyore’s story. Comments range from sadness at human cruelty to messages of hope for Eeyore’s future. “The pain and horror that people inflict on these children is unbelievable. Thank you for loving her—she deserves the best ❤️,” One viewer wrote. Another commented, “Cute handsome Eeyore, hope with everything you find, you get the happily ever after you deserve❤️❤️.”

When asked why she didn’t adopt Eeyore herself, Harshey answered“Keeping this dog means more dogs will continue to go without a home and then be at risk of being euthanized.” Her response highlighted a broader issue: the growing need for more people to open their homes to pets, allowing rescue organizations to save more lives.

The New South Wales greyhound racing regulator has been caught using retired greyhounds as sales targets, with executives allegedly receiving bonuses based on the number of dogs they “culled”.

Eeyore’s story, filled with hardship but also empowered by moments of hope, serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of prejudice on animal adoption. It is a call for potential adopters to look beyond appearances and provide homes for dogs like Eeyore who deserve a chance at happiness. We have no doubt that Eeyore will soon find his forever family!
