Dodge’s Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust System Starts Making Unpleasant Sounds

Trained ear and software programmer at avoid has been working on the automaker’s Dodge Fratzonic Exhaust for over two years now. The first version we heard two years ago sounded too electric, second draft from a year ago injected some much-needed muscle. Now, more than a year later, we’re getting a taste of the third arrangement. This one is much closer to real muscle. Dodge has been running a Charger Daytona went through a tunnel to start the sample—getting some audio support in the process—but even after going through the tunnel, the ICE rhythm of perfectly timed explosions was still clearly audible. We don’t know what happened between the second take and this one. To our ears, this sounds very much like a V8 recording, although Dodge has previously said that’s not how they use the system.

To refresh, the Fratzonic Exhaust is essentially a speaker driver with a tuned box and dual “passive radiators”, are driverless speaker cones. In situations where space is an issue, these so-called “drone cones” operate on sound pressure within the enclosure, helping to create deeper tones. Dodge claims the combination of mechanics and tuning allows the battery-electric Charger Daytona to reach the same 126dB emissions as the gas-powered Hellcat models. And we’re told these aren’t just recorded noises from Dodge’s ICE lineup, the team creates unique sounds for each electrified powertrain level that include familiar notes and V8 rhythms. Additionally, each powertrain will offer a variety of sounds for each vehicle, with volume and timbre changing depending on the drive mode selected. Dodge also confirmed that owners will be able to “rev” the Charger Daytona from a stop, adding to the old-school performance feel.

We shouldn’t go too far to explore how it all comes together in real life. The electric muscle car is reported to be delayed by three months to address some issues. Assuming Dodge is back on track, we expect a debut this month and more information about price of first version.
