Devin Haney arrested on felony firearms charges in Los Angeles
Lightweight champion Devin Haney was arrested for concealing a felony weapon early Thursday morning in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports. He has a court date of August 3.
Police said a handgun was found under the driver’s seat when the vehicle in which he was a passenger was stopped for a traffic violation. According to TMZ, this gun is a semi-automatic handgun.
The younger Haney was booked and then released. He was released at 8:12 a.m., according to court records cited by TMZ.
According to TMZ, Haney spent Wednesday evenings at Catch LA, a nightclub in West Hollywood. The vehicle overturned shortly after midnight because of unsafe lane changes and failure to use turn signals, the outlet reported.
The driver of the car reported to the police that there was a gun in the vehicle. Haney was the one arrested because the car was registered to him.
Bill Haney told ESPN that the case was “a misunderstanding that will be resolved when Devin goes to court. Unfortunately, he was arrested with his armed licensed security forces, and I am confident that all will be resolved.”
Haney (30-0, 15 KOs) is about to have his biggest win yet, a close, but unanimous decision against Vasiliy Lomachenko to defend his 135-pound title on May 20.
He and 140-pound belt owner Teofimo Lopez have been teasing each other on Twitter over the past few days that seem to lead to a meeting in the ring.
