Top heavyweight Deontay Wilder was in a bit of trouble. He was arrested Tuesday morning in Los Angeles for possession of a concealed firearm. The former WBC champion is said to have been stopped because his license plate was out of view and had illegally stained windows. While speaking to Wilder, the policeman – who allegedly claimed the tough boxer was an outright gentleman – smelled a pot in the car. When they searched the vehicle, they found the gun and then apprehended the former colorful list shortly after 1 a.m. Wilder was later issued with a $35k bond. The car he was driving was a Rolls Royce.
Wilder’s possession of a concealed firearm, a 9mm automatic, is considered a felony, which means his arrest is no small matter. With that said, boxers aren’t known to be a threat outside of the ring, so things may not turn out as bad as possible for the man. With that said, Wilder left the following post on social media after the arrest: “I’d rather be safe than sorry. It’s over.” It’s unclear if the 37-year-old father of eight will have to appear in court or when.
Considered one of the toughest fighters in heavyweight history, the 43-2-1 father of eight was undefeated until he fought Tyson Fury to draw in 2018, then knocked his arm out. punched the British twice in a row in 2020 and 2021 respectively (the third match between the two men was an instant classic). Since that time, Wilder has impressively defeated Robert Helenius in a match last October. He’s recently been seen as a potential rival to former players Andy Ruiz and Anthony Joshua, as well as a potential rival to former UFC champion Francis Ngannou. For now, however, his biggest rival may be the state of California.
