Retired British heavyweight David Price has given his thoughts on the world belt war everyone is talking about – the rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Anthony Joshua.
Talk to Ali Drew on the Latest Boxing Social Podcast, the Liverpool boxer was asked what AJ could do to win after being convincingly overtaken by Usyk in the first round. Like many fans, Price says it’s all down to a new game plan.
“Let’s avoid the path of trying to bypass the master boxer.”
“If you [AJ] can come back to him [Usyk] up to the rope and he can only go left or right, that’s when he can get some success. So my advice would be educational pressure with the forefoot.”
“Do whatever he can to get whatever works for him. Even anything can make a little cut. Whatever. Because it would take something different to defeat him. “
Price, who has won both Commonwealth and British Heavyweight titles during his career, is no stranger to the ups and downs of boxing, including getting injured in the ring.
After an exciting start to his professional career, losses made up for the likes of Tony Thompson, Christian Hammer, and Alexander Povetkin ended up blocking his way to the world title.
Despite discussing a potential path to victory for AJ, he believes Usyk’s strength has kept Brit at bay and will get the job done by Saturday night.
“If AJ implements the tactics people want him to – get close, rough him up and be aggressive – he’ll let himself be more open to reactions.”
“My opinion is that last year he felt the power of Usyk, and in boxing if you come across something with power it doubles the impact. That might be why Joshua was a little more apprehensive in that bout – because he was caught early. “
“I think Usyk will stop him late this time, because he almost did in the first fight.”
