When someone wants to steal a car and police lead on one high speed chaseIt usually doesn’t end well, and sometimes the circumstances are unbelievable. We’ve seen it all from a Google Street View The car was traveling at more than 100 miles per hour before crashing into a stream. a U-Haul truck led police on a 53-mile chase. The latest bizarre incident saw a man embark on a high-speed chase in a stolen Corvette before wrecking it, thinking he could escape by hiding in a swamp.

Road & Track report that the man, identified as 24-year-old Zyrell Webb, stole the C7 Corvette in Virginia and drove to Scotland Neck, North Carolina, where he was spotted speeding by the local police department. When authorities attempted to stop Webb for speeding, he fled. A statement on Scotland Neck Police Facebook Webb reportedly reached speeds of more than 100 mph during the chase.

Sergeant Lawrence noticed the vehicle was speeding and attempted to stop it, unaware that it was stolen. Webb sped away and eluded capture, reaching speeds in excess of 100 mph. Fortunately, the pursuit occurred during a time when there was little or no traffic. The chase took Sergeant Lawrence through Princeville, where Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Tarboro Police Department officers were on the scene.

The chase ended when Webb crashed into a guardrail, damaging the Corvette. He may have thought he could get home safely by ditching in a nearby swamp with his female passenger. 21st-century technology was deployed: Police were able to find Webb by using a heat-seeking drone to search the area.

Authorities said the passenger was rescued from the swamp, but Webb tried to flee again and was spotted by the drone. Both Webb and the passenger were taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

There’s no word on the charges against his passenger, but Webb will certainly be gone for a while. Police say he has a lengthy record, and now faces a slew of charges: Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Fleeing After an Accident, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Resisting an Officer, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Forged Identification, and Speeding. That hurts.
