Mary Moraa of Kenya fought Keely Hodgkinson and Laura Muir of the Anglo-Scotland match for the 800m gold at the Commonwealth Games.
The 22-year-old world bronze medalist displayed a stunning pace as he descended to the home court to overtake Hodgkinson, winning in one minute 57.07 seconds.
Scotland’s Muir won bronze by one hundredth of a second ahead of Jamaica’s Natoya Goule.
Muir will have one more shot of glory in Sunday’s 1500m final.
However, Hodgkinson said she is “on fire” for missing the chance to win her first international title in front of a home audience.
“I’m not sure what happened, it happened so quickly,” the Olympic and world silver medalist told BBC Sport.
“The first lap I went was a bit difficult, maybe I could have been a little more patient.
“There are positives but I want gold so I’m fuming. I want to stand on that podium in front of a home audience.
“Unfortunately, I brought a silver one. But I have one more chance.”
Hodgkinson, like Muir, is part of a large British team that will travel to Munich for the European Championships next week.
They, like the winners, are sure to revisit this action-packed race before they head to Germany.
Moraa initially seemed to have misjudged her speed, breaking out of the herd at the opening 300 meters, before slowing down around the bell.
But there were still plenty of stings on her legs, and when Hodgkinson and Muir tried to pressurize 200 meters from home, Moraa tracked them down and found another device.
As Hodgkinson and Muir jumped down the track behind the line, Moraa happily broke off a celebratory outfit for the television cameras.
Aside from US Olympic and world champion Athing Mu, Moraa is the only athlete to have beaten Hodgkinson in the 800m this year.
She won in Stockholm in June with a similarly ferocious kick from home and the former 400m pro, who changed only two rounds last year, looks set to make Mu and Hodgkinson’s showdown the next one. a three-way drama.
“Oh my gosh, these girls are so fast,” Muir told BBC Sport after finishing at 1:57.87, 0.47 seconds behind Hodgkinson.
“I was fourth with 100 meters to go and I was like ‘no way’.
“Kids, that’s why if your coach tells you to run all the way to the line, you run all the way.”
Chalmers adds chapter to the story of Guernsey’s island
Three-time British champion Alastair Chalmers won Guernsey’s first Commonwealth medal outside of shooting and grass bowls with a superb bronze in the 400m hurdles.
The 22-year-old, running in lane two, followed Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands, who successfully defended his title, and Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica in 49.97 seconds.
“You guys are amazing, all of you,” Chalmers told the crowd after they had carried him home the last 100 yards.
Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo overcame Kenyans Nicholas Kimeli and Jacob Krop to take the 5,000m gold and double the distance after his 10,000m run four days earlier.
England’s Marc Scott finished fourth with a season-best 13:19.84, but was more than 10 seconds behind the leading trio.
In the first track final of the evening, Jamaica’s Janieve Russell kept his cool to defend his 400m hurdles title as fellow countryman Rushel Clayton sped and faded even further. Clayton finished fourth, one place ahead of England’s Jessie Knight
