The challenge of landscape photography is that you have no control over the placement of elements in the scene and as such, creating compelling compositions can be a challenge. If you’re new to the genre or find yourself struggling a bit, check out this great video tutorial that will show you some common layout mistakes and how to fix them or avoid them in the first place.
Coming to you from Mads Peter Iversen, this great video tutorial discusses some great tips for composing landscape photos as well as some common mistakes to avoid. By far the most common mistake I see is not including the foreground element in the frame. The problem is that we often use wide angle lenses to shoot landscapes and without a foreground element, the resulting image can look quite two-dimensional and flat with a large gap in it. Adding a foreground element helps to give depth and depth to a photo and can also help draw the viewer’s eye into the image. Watch the video above for the full rundown from Iversen.
