Chrysler recalls about 24,000 Pacifica PHEVs, requires charging stops and off-site parking


  • Chrysler has issued a recall for about 24,000 Pacifica plug-in hybrid minivans from the 2017 through 2021 model years.
  • The recall stems from a fire hazard issue due to an abnormality in the battery.
  • A free software update will be released to fix the issue, but owners are asked to stop charging and park their cars outside until the update is released.

Stellantis on Thursday Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid plug-in hybrid minivans recalled globally due to fire hazard.

Reuters reported that Stellantis is advising affected vehicle owners Park outside and away from structuresand to avoid charging is awaiting a software update to address the issue, which the automaker says is related to battery abnormality.

The recall population includes Pacifica Hybrids from model year 2014. 2017 to 2021includes approximately 19,500 vehicles in the United States, approximately 3,000 in Canada, and 1,700 vehicles outside North America. The Pacifica Hybrid is the only plug-in hybrid minivan sold in the United States, while the Pacifica is the only Chrysler-branded vehicle currently in production.

Stellantis is said to be aware of seven incidents related to the issue, which occurred when the vehicle was turned off and in some cases while charging. Four customers also reported symptoms consistent with smoke inhalation, according to Reuters. The automaker believes the risk of fire is lower when the battery is depleted.

Stellantis is working on a Software updates to detect battery abnormalities identified as the root cause of the issue. The automaker will notify customers when the update is ready, as well as when the minivan’s battery pack will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced by a dealer free of charge.

This isn’t the first time Stellantis has recalled Pacifica Hybrid minivans and warned owners not to charge them. In 2022, the automaker recalled nearly 20,000 plug-in hybrids from 2017 and 2018 models due to risk of fire and explosion, release fix later that year. The Pacifica Hybrid also Recalled due to fire hazard in 2020but this time it was a faulty connection to the 12 volt auxiliary battery.
