Chris Eubank Jr calls Gennadiy Golovkin
Chris Eubank Jr once again called Gennadiy Golovkin about a fight between the two. For years, the British star has wanted to take on the modern middleweight big boys but has yet to get into the ring with him.
Eubank was in talks about a domestic bout with Kell Brook this summer, but the former welterweight champion announced his retirement from boxing last week. And any possibility of ‘GGG’ renewing its acquaintance with old foe Canelo Alvarez in September for a third time was dashed over the weekend when the Mexican was completely defeated by Dmitrii Bivol.
Eddie Hearn, who promotes both boxers, said there is a rematch clause.
After the defeat, Canelo told the media that he plans to take advantage of the opportunity to avenge the second loss of his career.
“Well @GGGBoxing looks like you’ll need a new partner now that Canelo has been dethroned. I’m ready to tango baby, let’s start this summer,” Eubank wrote on Twitter yesterday.
Golovkin generally denies anything came out of Eubank’s mouth following a scheduled fight between the two that took place in 2016. In the six years since, the 32-year-old, now coached by legendary Roy Jones Jr., won. against the likes of Arthur Abraham, James DeGale and Liam Williams.
Last month in Japan, 40-year-old Golovkin united the 160lbs squad to block Ryota Murata for nine innings. The Kazakh currently holds the IBF and WBA titles. In the current WBA rankings, Eubank Jr is the number one candidate.
