AI ChatGPT has surprised, even alarmed Google with its rapidly growing popularity — and now, analysts at Swiss bank UBS say it’s also a growing consumer app. fastest in history.

UBS analysis estimates that ChatGPT had 100 million active users in January, after launching two months ago at the end of November. It attracted a million users in just one week.

According to Reuters note, ChatGPT’s growth rate is much faster than the 9 months that TikTok has reached 100 million and the 2 and a half years that Instagram has achieved. In the much earlier web era, Google and Facebook took over five years each to reach 100 million users.

However, ask ChatGPT and it disagrees with its label as ‘app’ and thinks it’s really a machine learning model.

“Is ChatGPT the fastest growing app in history?” we ask it.

“No, OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model, which supports ChatGPT, is not an application, it’s a machine learning model designed to generate human-like text based on input given to it. . GPT-3 has been widely recognized as one of the largest and most advanced language models to date, but it is not an application and has not been measured in terms of user growth.”

Microsoft made a big investment in OpenAI last month, began embedding GPT-3 on its products. GPT-3.5 for example, reinforces some of the smart summary features in the new Teams Premium Microsoft 365 add-on.

Microsoft has also released: Azure OpenAI Service to give developers access to GPT-3.5; DALL•E 2, AI creates images from common descriptors; and Codex, GitHub’s GPT-3-based platform Copilot AI pair programming service.

OpenAI this week subscription service launch called ChatGPT Plus for those who want to use the tool, even if it reaches capacity. The paid service is available to customers in the US for $20 per month.

is Google is said to be racing to regulate Search and possibly other products for ChatGPT. The company is testing a chatbot called Apprentice Bard with similar capabilities, but embedded with Search. Meanwhile, Microsoft is said to have plans to use ChatGPT to improve Bing.

However, Meta’s AI director, Yann LeCun, recently noted that the basic techniques of ChatGPT are “not particularly innovative”because it relies heavily on Transformer technology developed by Google.

“I’m not criticizing OpenAI’s work nor their claims. I’m trying to correct the *perception* of the public and the media, who see chatGPT as an extremely new, innovative technological breakthrough. create and unique beyond everyone else,” Le Cun said in answer.

Meta and Google also developed chatbots, but didn’t bring them out into the world the way OpenAI did with ChatGPT. LeCun tweeted a chart of AI research results, with Google and Microsoft at the top and OpenAI at the bottom, noting: “Data on intellectual contribution to AI from different research institutions. Several organizations publish knowledge and open source code for worldwide use. Others just consume it.”
