CATL-Vinfast partnership could mean more electric vehicles for emerging markets

On Monday, Vinfast signed a memorandum of understanding with CATL, laying the groundwork for the future use of battery pack cell technology and skateboard frame designs in future vehicles.

CATL said in a press release: “By leveraging CATL’s advanced battery power, Vinfast’s innovative electric vehicles will reach new heights in terms of range, safety and drivability. bright. “The partnership will also allow CATL to enhance its global footprint, particularly in emerging markets, and accelerate the adoption of new EV technologies.”

Components currently under discussion include the CATL Integrated Intelligent Chassis (CIIC) skateboard, which, like similar designs from other companies, incorporates the battery pack, motor, and all mechanical components into the frame. , allowing easy design of multiple body styles for the same component set.

Vinfast can also utilize the potential of CATL’s cell-to-pack technology, which creates a battery pack from individual cells without the need for modules used in conventional package designs.

CATL just unveiled a new generation version of its cell-to-pack technology last April, Claiming an advantage over Tesla battery technology in energy density. It also indicates a “break” water cooled design for the package – with an energy density of 255 Wh/kg with current technology lithium-ion cells and 160 Wh/kg for LFP cells – offering a range of more than 1,000 km (621 miles).

Although not mentioned in the release, CATL has also discussed other interesting technology recently.

CATL is one of the innovators pushing sodium ion cells towards production — potentially enabling Charge 80% in 15 minutes. And it was launched a battery swap The solution for China, aimed at those without home charging, could scale well to emerging markets.

Vinfast has planned its EV around Compulsory battery rental—Though it currently offers them in the US without that arrangement. The company plans to start shipping in the US for the VF 8 and VF 9 before the end of the year. The cars will initially be sourced from Vietnam, Vinfast’s home country, but the company plans to start making vehicles for the US market at a factory in North Carolina in 2024.
