Cardiff hit by Covid-19 in South Africa

Hot news

Cardiff’s hopes of flying out of South Africa on Sunday were over after two Covid-19 positive cases were confirmed in their team.

The club confirms one of the suspected cases is the Omicron variant which has caused travel restrictions on flights from South Africa to the UK.

A statement from Cardiff said: “The PCR tests carried out last night have returned two positive results.”

The players and coaching staff have “returned to their hotels for isolation”.

The statement added: “Cardiff Rugby continues to work with the South African Rugby Federation, Rugby Wales and public health authorities both at home and abroad to decide on next action.

“The club is also continuing to work with all relevant authorities to ensure the return of the tour group to Wales when appropriate and safe.

“Everyone involved in this challenging situation would like to thank family, friends, colleagues and the wider rugby family for their many messages of concern and well-wishes.

“No comment will be made at this time.”

Cardiff traveled to South Africa to compete in the United Rugby Championship, but all matches in the country this weekend and the following weekend have been postponed.

Meanwhile, Cardiff and Wales rivals Scarlets are trying to get home as soon as possible.

Cardiff say they booked a charter flight for Sunday afternoon, but their departure has been delayed for an unspecified amount of time.

Than to follow.
