With so many plugins out there to choose from and with nearly everyone trying to emulate the old movie look, is this new plugin worth considering? Check out our reviews.
There are many plugins for creating digital movie looks. Some do pretty much what you would expect them to do in ways you can’t control. Others have a bit more accuracy but are still constrained by the fact that they are trying to simulate old film stocks. With so many presets to choose from, it’s easy to lose a sense of context or comparison. Dehancer is one of those plugins that doesn’t quite fit into either of these categories. It’s not exactly a built-in package, but it’s not a plugin either, at least not in the usual sense. It doesn’t give you the typical slider controls that most plugins do; instead, it gives you a list of movie stocks and assigns each movie a numerical value that represents its effect on your image. In other words, instead of sliding controls and hoping for the best, Dehancer helps you achieve specific skins by giving you precise numerical values for each interface so you can achieve them every time. time easily.
Now, there’s a lot of controversy in this area, with everyone having different opinions on what form movies should be. We all have our own interpretations, with the problem being that there are so many different things out there, with most of them being advertised as looking like a particular stock. This is why Dehancer piqued my interest. Between using film profiles, light correction techniques, bloom and grain plus other finite adjustments, Dehancer promises to make all digital images look like they were shot in stock. old movies.
Display
The Dehancer plugin works on both Photoshop and Lightroom, with the same look and feel for both. The interface is simple and clean but has some powerful features for movie emulation. I’m currently beta testing it and I hope there won’t be too many changes if any in the final release, as it’s intuitive and easy to use.
- The Movie Profile can be found here, and there are also options to save your favorite movies for easy access later. Just select a profile and your picture updates in the main view window.

- The business side of the plugin. Here, you can edit the image to your liking. A lot is going on here, so you should spend some time here just to see what you can do with your images. Any edits you make to the movie profile can be saved as a preset for future work.
- In this panel you have basic reset, undo/redo, hidden sidebar and settings gear that allows you to update movie profiles, set GPU processing and choose to show previews based on megapixels of the image.
The editing sidebar is collapsible, allowing you to work the way you see best. Each editing parameter is based on a calculation of the movie profile, not just a slider to increase or decrease the effect. When I edit my images with the panels, even with slight movements of the sliders, the difference is obvious and I’m impressed by how much work has gone into the backend of the app. software to produce results like it.
Even a particle filter is not just a filter that distributes particles according to a uniform distribution or a Gaussian distribution. Finite adjustments with different effects can be made each time the slider is moved. I’ve included some examples with different adjustments below, some subtle and some quite pushy, like in the previous example. Hopefully, this will allow you to see that it’s not simply increasing noise, but changing it based on the image’s tint, tones, shadows, and highlights within it, with each being adjustable. separate controls.
Movie Profile
With a choice of 62 movie profiles and the ability to adjust and fine-tune them to your taste, you can certainly create unique profiles for your images. Immediately, the provided profiles ended up on their own, but if you want to tweak them a bit, you can. However, be warned: once you get started with this, you’ll feel like you’re in a dark room all over again, as it’s addictive.
Easy to use
Everything is very simple when it comes to using the plugin. Run two installations, one for Lightroom and one for Photoshop, and you’re up and running. The registry key is applied in the settings gear window.
The simple layout and intuitive editing slider panel make for a no-nonsense and very effective plugin that can become quite addictive to use.
What I like
Everything, simple as that. It’s refreshing to see the software take a unique approach to results. It feels like every little detail has been considered, from the initial movie profile settings, to the editing approach of the sliders, to the simple layout of the interface.
What I don’t like
As I mentioned, this is beta, but one thing I want is to be able to see the edited image against a white background, so you can check the color, brightness and contrast when printing.
Should you buy?
Digital film has been around for a long time, but with the advent of new techniques and software, it is now possible to emulate classic film stocks. This can be done by software or further via the LUT, but finite control isn’t there. The Dehancer Plugins are a way in which you can shoot your digital footage and emulate vintage film stocks and still have full control over the results. If you come from a cinematic background or even if you are new to film looks, I don’t think you will be disappointed with this software in any way. This is a great plugin for those who want to get the look of classic movies without having to go back to the movies.
