BYD’s Tesla Model 3 EV rival is about to launch in Australia

Chinese electric vehicle company is growing rapidly BYD preparing to launch a new one EV Sedan to compete with Tesla Model 3 – and Australian orders are expected to begin in late 2022.

The BYD . Seal, as its name suggests in China, has just gone on sale in the domestic market with deliveries expected to begin this month. We still don’t know what it will be called here.

Media sources there cite pre-order numbers in the range of 60,000 won and 110,000 cars, depending on the source you read. Either way it seems to be a hit.

The good news from an Australian perspective is that you will be able to get your hands on a product by 2023 as a local importer of BYD, EVDirect.com.au, there are big expansion plans.

Expect orders to be taken both online, as well as in-store at one of BYD’s stores Nationwide agent recent details supported by Eagers Automotive, an ASX-listed organization.

The BYD Seal is expected to be one of two additional BYDs to go on sale here this year, the other likely to be a compact hatchback based on China Market BYD Dolphin.

The first car in the Australian market, Atto 3″ small SUVcome in August.

The company has actually confirmed to us this week that local orders for the BYD Seal are on track to open for Australia by the end of 2022, although it has yet to be able to give a delivery date.

For some ambiguity, BYD Atto 3 arrives in August after a few delays, which is about six months. after its price is announced.

As for the name of the BYD Seal in the Australian market, that is also unclear. However, we understand that the ‘Atto 4’ as speculated elsewhere will not be used on this vehicle.

EVDirect.com.au claims to have 3500 Atto pre-orders already, which, if delivered, would put the company in the top EV sellers in Australia, behind Tesla.

While Atto 3 will compete with MG ZS EV is about to be updated At the end of the market, the BYD Seal is more of a Tesla Model 3 competitor in terms of size and shape.

So in China, it is considered the most important car of BYD. Keep in mind that Warren Buffet-backed BYD is one of Tesla’s biggest competitors from non-‘reputable’ auto OEMs.

This is also the BYD that announced last week that it three EVs coming soon in Japan in 2023: Atto 3, Seal and Dolphin – uncommon for a Chinese brand.

Conceptually similar objective models are clearly Polestar 2 and the new one is revealed Hyundai Ioniq 6.

The BYD Seal measures 4800mm long, about 100mm longer than the Model 3. Its entry price is just over 220,000 yuan ($46,500) compared to 280,000 yuan ($A59,300) of Tesla.

That was before the discount.

The style of the BYD Seal, created under the leadership of former Audi design chief Wolfgang Egger, closely resembles the style of the recent BYD Ocean-X concept.

The domestic driving range is claimed to be between 550km and 700km depending on the battery, though it’s not yet clear how close these goals are in the real world. Expect the base model’s WLTP range to be around 450 km.

The mediocre single-engine versions (supposedly rear-wheel drive) use 150kW and 310Nm motors and a 61.4kWh ‘BYD Blade’ battery pack, which can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds. The range is listed as 550 km.

The more mid-range models offer 230kW and 360Nm outputs and a larger 82.5kWh battery, and a 0-100km/h time of 5.9 seconds. The range is listed as 700km.

The dual-motor AWD performance model quotes 390kW and 670Nm outputs with the addition of another motor. BYD says a time of 3.8 seconds 0-100km/h and a range of 650 km.

Seal is based on BYD’s new flexible, skateboard-like ‘E-Platform 3.0’ with the brand’s exclusive ‘Blade’ lithium-iron phosphate battery (system voltage up to 800V). This chemistry – also in the Chinese-made Model 3 – is designed to maximize stability and lifecycle.

Regarding curb weight, BYD .’s past government records lists numbers from 1885kg for the base to 2150kg for the dual-motor – slightly larger than the Tesla listed as between 1752kg and 1836kg.
