British Open 2024 prize money and purse: Payout for every golfer at Royal Troon from record $17 million prize fund

The R&A will award the largest cash prize in the history of The Open Championship in 2024 to its Golfer of the Year on Sunday. With a purse of $17 million for The Open Championship in 2024 — up $500,000 from last year — the winner at Royal Troon will take home a record $3.1 million.

That total is slightly less than the purses paid at the first three major championships of the season. Bryson DeChambeau earned $4.3 million for his stunning victory at the US Open, while Scottie Scheffler earned $3.6 million at the Masters and Xander Schauffele won $3.3 million for his PGA Championship victory.

The first three majors also had larger prize pools as the US Open set a record with a total prize pool of $21.5 million, while the Masters awarded $20 million and the PGA Championship awarded golfers a total of $18.5 million.

“The R&A has a responsibility to strike the right balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game and providing the necessary funds to manage and develop amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries around the world,” said Martin Slumbers, CEO of the R&A.

“We have to make choices if we are to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for the future of golf. We remain concerned about the impact that a significant increase in men’s professional prize money would have on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with a view to the interests of the global game as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive for the next 50 years.”

Every player who finishes in the top 10 at The Open will earn at least $350,000, with those on the podium all earning seven-figure paydays. Those who finish in the top 32 will take home more than $100,000 at the season’s final major. At the other end of the spectrum, here’s a list of the stars will not play this weekend at Royal Troon after failing to qualify.
