British Airways expands to Cincinnati, 27th US city

British Airways is landing in Cincinnati, giving the city its second transatlantic flight.

Starting June 5, BA will offer direct service from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to its main hub at London Heathrow Airport (LHR). The airline will fly between cities on 214-seat Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, including 35 flatbeds and 25 premium economy seats.

British Airways will operate the flight five times a week during the summer before reducing to four weekly flights during the winter schedule with lower demand.

For Cincinnati, however, landing a direct flight to London is a boost for the airport that was once one of the nation’s top connectivity hubs. Delta Air Lines operates a hub there that became its second largest hub in the early 2000s. It operates hundreds of flights daily from CVG, including several popular transatlantic routes. .

However, CVG’s importance to Delta waned after it merged with Northwest Airlines in 2008, and the airline reduced its schedule there several times over the next decade before phasing out it completely de-centralized in 2017. As of 2022, CVG is left with only one regular airline. route to Europe – Delta flies direct to Paris.

Now, the London route provides the airport with a second transatlantic route – and a prestigious blow for an airport of its size.

“British Airways’ non-stop service from CVG to London-Heathrow is an all-out win for the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana region,” added Airport CEO Candace McGraw in the statement. “The economic impact of this transatlantic flight is exponential on business travel, economic development and tourism between the UK and our region of the US.”

BA’s new Cincinnati flights come as it adds more US flights; it also announced plans to add more flights on existing London routes from both Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Oregon’s Portland International Airport (PDX).

Oneworld travelers may appreciate this route as another option for mileage tickets to Europe. Using BA loyalty currency, award tickets for June are available for 20,000 Avios one-way to London in economy class and 60,000 in business class. BA partner American Airlines also shows award availability on BA’s non-stop Cincinnati-London flight, with one-way tickets available in June for 30,000 economy miles or 57,500 business class miles.
