Caleb was traveling with his parents and siblings when a driver negligently crossed their lane, colliding with their car. The young driver, who was only a child, accidentally took the lives of Caleb’s mother and both of her children, but 6-year-old Caleb miraculously survived. However, his injuries were severe enough to be life-threatening.

Despite being the only member alive, Caleb received serious injuries. While his broken bones will heal, his traumatic brain injury can lead to death, paralysis, and brain damage, which goes on for a long time. To support him, Caleb’s father and grandmother did whatever it took; However, every day is a struggle.
No one knows what the outcome of these two approaches will be. Doctors recommend a non-traditional therapy using a canine. To see if having a dog around Caleb could stimulate activity and thereby help with healing, the medical team wanted to try a basic interaction. While he was hesitant, Caleb’s father agreed.

The colonel, a golden retriever, was once a creative and non-intrusive way for Caleb to get “medicine. The dog sat quietly beside him with his trainer Susan. They waited for Caleb to react in some way, but it didn’t take long.
Even as the Colonel lay on Caleb’s hospital bed, wiggling almost hugging Caleb’s small body to keep him company, and even trying to mount him in his sleep, Caleb reacted. His heart rate increased, and his respiratory function improved. Something amazing happened, and it was all thanks to a single change in Caleb’s routine: The Colonel.

The boy beamed whenever the Colonel came to see him. The medical team was shocked. Caleb quickly regained consciousness, wanting to sit up and socialize with the adorable dog. The colonel affected Caleb in an inexplicable way, both physically and emotionally.

Caleb was playing catch with the Colonel. And giggle! Sure, it took time and patience – as did the team of doctors to the family – but it was Caleb who really connected with him on a different level that in itself encouraged healing. The story only gets better from here!
