If what BMW says is true, then M5 owners are not using their cars as intended. Engine 1 reported that Daniela Schmid, product manager of the M5, told Romanian auto magazine Automatic criticism that most M5 owners don’t take their cars to the track, and those who do, usually only take them once and never return.

“For M5 customers, we know that there is a very small percentage who only drive the car on the track once,” M5 product manager Daniela Schmid told Romanian magazine Auto Critica. “Continuously… I think hardly anyone does that. For us, it is important that any M model can be used on the track,” Schmid added. “If there are customers who want that, they can do it without any problems, but that potential is also available when they drive their cars every day. For this reason, we still maintain the requirement that the car can be used on the track, even though we know that not many customers actually do so.

Schmid also revealed that the M5 buyer group is predominantly middle-aged men who are “businessmen or senior managers,” which is no surprise. Schmid said these buyers come to the M5 as they get older, having previously owned an M3 or M4. However, Schmid acknowledged that the buyer group is changing. There are more women buying cars, and thanks to Asia, buyers are getting younger.

M5 owners who don’t keep track of their cars shouldn’t be surprised. We often criticize SUV owners for not keeping their cars on the streetBut high-performance cars that don’t race are rarely mentioned.
