Never a company that shy away from far-fetched designs, BMW car used the CES Show as a backdrop to pull its endings out iX Flow concept. It looks pretty much like any other iX cross-prototype, except that it’s wrapped in an E Ink technology-based wrapper to change color. E Ink, for those unfamiliar, is the display technology used by e-books like the Amazon Kindle line. Unlike other display technologies, E Ink uses very little power as it refreshes between white and black. BMW says the E Ink is embedded in a wrap “precisely designed to match the contours of an all-electric Sports Performance Vehicle.”
“This gives the driver the freedom to express different aspects of their personality or even their enjoyment of change outwardly and redefine them,” said Stella Clarke, BMW iX Flow Project Manager. this every time they get in their car.” E lnk, said in a statement. “Similar to fashion or status ads on social media channels, the means of transport then become an expression of different moods and circumstances in everyday life.”
There may be some truth to the idea that owners might want their car to reflect their mood, but we guess most people would want to express it with more freedom of choice. a little bit. While E Ink color technology does not exist (although whether it can be applied in car wrap, we can’t say), BMW iX Flow uses traditional grayscale shades, varying electronically between white, gray, and black. This is a completely different idea from luminescent paint that we have seen in the past.
There are a number of practical reasons why a car that converts between white and black might be desirable. Because white surfaces reflect more of the sun’s rays, they stay cooler. Black surfaces, on the other hand, absorb the sun’s rays, which can be useful in colder temperatures.
We don’t know if BMW plans to put anything resembling a color-changing car into production – we guess not anytime soon – but it’s viable that the automaker can at least deliver Some custom interior or exterior trim or details stand out in a number of unique ways. For now, however, this is a conceptual exercise.
