The top 50 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will compete in the 2024 BMW Championship this week at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, marking the second event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Hideki Matsuyama won the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, recovering from a five-shot lead in the final round. He also won the Genesis Invitational earlier this season and won bronze at the Olympics. Matsuyama, who has risen from No. 8 to No. 3 in the standings, is 18-1 for the 2024 BMW Championship.

Top Predictions for the 2024 BMW Championship Golf Tournament
One surprise: McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the top favorites, did not crack the top five this week. McIlroy finished second to Bryson DeChambeau at the US Open after missing a pair of short putts on the final three holes, and he has struggled for consistent results since. He missed the cut in the final major of the year at the Open Championship before finishing T68 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week.
McIlroy ranks outside the top 100 on the PGA Tour in GIR and outside the top 80 in driving accuracy. He may be tempted to increase his driving distance this week on the long course, which could exacerbate his accuracy issues. The model doesn’t feel comfortable backing the inconsistent Northern Irishman this week, instead recommending other golfers.
The model also looked at where Schauffele finished. Schauffele nearly completed one of the biggest comebacks in PGA Tour history at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, entering the clubhouse with a share of the lead on Sunday after starting the day nine shots behind the leader. Hideki Matsuyama finally had a couple of winning shots on the final few holes, but Schauffele maintained the momentum he had been playing all season.
The world No. 2 won his first major at the PGA Championship in May before adding another victory at the Open Championship last month. He has qualified in all 19 events he has entered, posting 13 top-10 finishes. However, he has some of the lowest odds of any of his competitors, so there may be other golfers who are worth more.
