Blue Cross package hit Amazon Pharmacy for home delivery

Amazon Pharmacy has reached out to another Blue Cross and Blue Shield customer, Florida Blue announced Tuesday.

Florida Blue will rely solely on Amazon Pharmacy to deliver drugs to more than 2 million commercial and self-insured customers next year.

Seven other Blues plans have signed similar, exclusive home delivery deals with Amazon Pharmacy: Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, Blue Cross Blue and Shield of Nebraska, Blue Cross and Blue Shield North Carolina, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey and Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Oregon, according to policy documents released by insurers.

Florida Blue, a nonprofit insurance company with nearly 6 million members, did not respond to a request for an interview. Amazon declined to comment on the number of patients it serves through its prescription drug delivery service.

“The expansion of our work with Blue plans supports our goal of making prescription drug access as simple as any other purchase: saving customers time, helping they have more control over their purchases and keep them healthy,” an Amazon spokesperson wrote in an e-mail.

Various Blues plans have also partnered with Amazon and its pharmacy benefits manager to integrate drug coupons into member benefits. Unlike competing drug discount cards, the amount a patient pays through MedsYourWay applies to their deductibles and maximum payout amount.

This month, Centene’s Wellcare announced that Amazon will be the preferred pharmacy for 1.5 million Medicare Advantage members next year.
