Beyonce released the first single from her seventh solo studio album Renaissance earlier than expected – to the surprise and delight of her fans.
“Bey is back and I’m sleeping soundly at night,” she announced of the track – Break My Soul – which is scheduled to be released at midnight EST (5am GMT).
However, it dropped on Tidal, the streaming service co-owned by her husband Jay-Z a few hours earlier and a video with lyrics on YouTube.
“You won’t break my soul,” the 40-year-old singer repeats during the chorus.
“Relieve the anger, clear the mind / Clear the work, free up the time / Release the business, relieve the stress / Release the love, forget the rest”, the new song continues with the interjected by rapper Big Freedia.
The catchy dance-friendly track was hailed as a “90s house/dance revival” as fans raved about it on social media.
One person wrote: “I love the fact that we never know where Beyoncé will go musically. Break My Soul is the first single but the album sounds completely different. That’s what’s so exciting about it. a Beyoncé era. All you know for sure is that you’ll get great quality music and pictures!”
Beyonce, who has won three number-one albums and five number-one singles in the UK, announced last week that she will be releasing a new album next month after a six-year hiatus.
The 28-time Grammy Award winner also included the subtitle “act i”, implying that the Renaissance can be broken up into several parts.
The announcement comes days after the star deleted her social media profile picture, prompting fans to speculate that new music is in development.
The pop superstar’s last lengthy solo release was Lemonade in 2016, which accompanies the 65-minute film of the same name and has peaked at number one in many countries.
In 2013, her album of the same name was released in the early hours of the morning without notice.
