Even so, Price said the video was “valuable evidence” and that the suspect was “very suspicious”.
Price did not disclose when the video was shot, except to say that it was filmed on the evening of December 13, 2017, the night the Shermans were murdered.
Price said police believe more help or information is currently needed from the public, and he asked those viewing the video to specifically observe the suspect’s “gait” or way of striding or walking. In the video, the suspect appears to kick their right heel while walking.
Police say they have conducted a “full video inspection” of the neighborhood and that they have other surveillance videos of the suspect and properties around the Sherman home.
“Based on when we understood, when we believed the murders had occurred, we sent this individual to a very defined area around the Sherman household and remained in that area for a period of time. We were therefore unable to determine the purpose for which the person was to be in that particular area and, therefore, and the time that is consistent with our beliefs about that area. the timing of these murders and that’s why we’re classifying this individual as a suspect,” Price added.
This is the first public update police have released on the investigation in nearly four years since the horrific double murder.
The couple’s gruesome discovery in one of North America’s most exclusive neighborhoods has left family, friends and city dwellers bewildered. Police said in early 2018 that the Shermans’ bodies were found in the basement pool area, side by side, with their belts around their necks.
Autopsies showed the couple died from “strangulation” or strangulation, and police said there was no sign of forcible entry into the Shermans’ home.
Even so, it took several weeks after the discovery for police to pinpoint the Shermans who had been murdered, after which they revealed they believed the pair had been “targeted”.
Price said the Sherman family wants the public to know that a $10 million private reward (CDN) is still available to anyone who assists in solving this crime.
Toronto investigators said they interviewed more than 250 witnesses and received 1255 tips from the public.
Price said investigators also received video analysis assistance from the FBI as well as law enforcement partners in Canada. He added that they traveled throughout the vicinity and received a large amount of data information from cell phone towers in the area as well as other videos.
“We were able to get rid of the majority of people caught on video, we were left with one individual that we were unable to identify,” Price said.
Price added that he did not rule out a “legitimate” explanation for the suspect’s presence in the neighborhood but that the person should come first if they recognize themselves in the video.
Police admitted the video was of “poor quality” and said that releasing it at any other time in the past few years would, in their view, not benefit the investigation.
“It was a very suspicious period, which is consistent with our beliefs about when these murders occurred,” Price said, though he declined to disclose how the suspect entered the area. neighborhood and use a car or public transit.
Police say they have owned the video for several years but do not want to compromise the “integrity” of the investigation by releasing it.
They said they hope Tuesday’s release will help them identify the suspect and determine why they were near Sherman’s property at the time of their murder.
