American Airlines and JetBlue Airways are continuing to grow in the Northeast, despite pending lawsuits against the carriers’ tie-ups.

Both airlines are adding new and expanding routes from New York and Boston according to The so-called Northeastern Allianceand this latest round of growth is welcome news for a number of markets previously served only by one dominant service provider.

Here are the details.

JETBLUE POLICY

JetBlue adds 5 more routes

Next spring, JetBlue will add four more direct routes from New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA)with the full list of new destinations below.

  • Atlanta — 4 times per day.
  • Bermuda — once daily, according to the summer.
  • Hyannis, Massachusetts — once daily, summertime.
  • Nassau, Bahamas — once daily.

Perhaps the most notable additions are daily services to the Bahamas and Hyannis. American used to serve the LaGuardia to Nassau market with weekly flights, but adding the daily JetBlue service will significantly increase capacity in the market.

Meanwhile, Hyannis — a popular summer destination on Cape Cod — has not been connected to LaGuardia since US Airways flew the route in October 2009, Cirium’s schedule shows.

As part of JetBlue’s new LaGuardia to Atlanta route, American plans to reduce its existing flight operations in this market. The Fort Worth-based carrier currently operates the 761-mile route four times daily with an Embraer 175 regional jet. With the new JetBlue service operating alongside American, American will no longer serve it. this route again. That said, JetBlue flights will still be a notable capacity increase and a competitive response to Delta’s hub to hub service in this market.

Additionally, JetBlue’s fifth route announced on Friday is a seasonal flight plan between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Vancouver International Airport (YVR) next summer (at an unspecified date). revealed).

It’s JetBlue service starts to Vancouver from New York this past summer, as part of the flashy announcement that is a “top request from flyers”. When JetBlue first came out plan to serve Canadait originally planned to fly from both New York and Boston this year.

However, due to an operational glitch that occurred in early 2022, the carrier decided to postpone indefinitely the Boston-Vancouver launch. Now, JetBlue has a schedule for this service: next summer. It is hoped that the airline can proceed with these plans without further delay.

In addition to the new routes, JetBlue will begin Mint business class service only on Saturdays between Newark and Aruba next summer. The airline will also resume daily summer flights between Newark and Montego Bay in 2023.

All new JetBlue flights will go on sale in January 2023.

6 new US routes

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINT

Beginning May 5, 2023, American will be adding six routes from LaGuardia as part of this final update focusing on the Northeast. Its new LaGuardia destinations include:

  • Birmingham – once per day.
  • Buffalo — 3 times per day.
  • Columbia, South Carolina – once daily.
  • Grand Rapids, Michigan – once daily.
  • Greenville, South Carolina – 2 times daily.
  • Knoxville, Tennessee — once a day.

The addition of these many small cities was a significant expansion of the Northeast Alliance. That’s because the only airline currently serving these routes is Delta, scheduled by Cirium.

Therefore, the partnership seems to bring more competition to the market, especially as Delta wants to reassert its position as New York’s largest airline.

Also in New York, American will expand its summer flights to Asheville, North Carolina, for year-round service. Americans will also add an additional frequency between Boston and Louisville.

The new American flights go on sale this weekend.

Defending the Northeast Alliance

The Northeast Alliance between American and JetBlue is currently against a antitrust lawsuit from the Ministry of Justice.

While the case was brought to the courtroom and Currently waiting for the final verdict from U.S. District Judge Leo Sorokin, both carriers continue to tout the benefits of their partnership.

With this latest network update, the two airlines will soon serve 45 of the top 50 domestic markets — a notable expansion that largely goes head-to-head with Delta.

In total, the carriers expect to make more than 500 daily departures from New York City’s three largest airports and nearly 200 daily departures from Boston next year. At New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport (JFK) alone, airlines are planning to offer around 300 departures daily.

“As we continue to enhance the Northeast Alliance and link more destinations with new non-stop options, customers finally have a prize,” said Dave Fintzen, vice president of JetBlue Northeast Alliances. attractive alternative to firms that have dominated the market for too long. in a statement.

All told, the treaty resulted in about 50 new routes out of New York City and Boston, increasing frequency on over 130 existing routes, 90 nonstop with capacity increase and 17 new international routesby airlines.

Now, all eyes return to the courtroom, as we await a decision from US District Judge Leo Sorokin.
