Amazon fascinates me with the slightest gesture (yes, I said Amazon)

No, I’m not in a good mood. It’s been raining in the Bay Area for fourteen years here. At least, that’s what it feels like.

Yes, I was cranky. What will you do about it?

At times like these, I sit reading, watching sports, or sitting on the couch my stationary bikeread and watch sports.

Once a day, I venture to the mailbox, only to see which financial planner, mortgage broker, or nefarious broker is trying to sell their dirty wares.

There’s only one postcard from a lousy plumber, but there are a few Amazon packages on the doorstep.

With the right distraction, I picked them up and brought them inside. I seem to be ordering books again, a hard habit to break.

Then I looked at the top package and stared for a few seconds.

This is a typical Amazon bubble wrap. It contains only one book, one paperback book. However, someone at Amazon decided to stuff it in a plastic bag to protect it a bit more from the pouring rain.

Maybe this happens to you all the time. Maybe you live somewhere that rains more than here. To me, this simple gesture conjures up the image of a human being who truly cares about the weather and does something to please others.

Just because.

Plastic bags are similar to the bags you put fruit in the grocery store. It is not a trademark of Amazon. It’s just a plain, transparent plastic bag, knotted at the top.

So I reached out to Amazon to ask who in the supply chain might be responsible for this little kindness. Is there someone at the warehouse? Is that the driver? In fact, is there some sort of company policy for the delivery of packages in bad weather?

Sadly, I did not receive any disclosure from the company.

In our greed and laziness — oh, come on, let’s admit it — we often forget about people who work hard and are often ungrateful. They provided us with something we could easily find in the store. If only we got off the sofa and headed for the door.

They went to work in the warehouse in the rain, while we worked from home.

They drive trucks filled with surveillance technology to bring hairspray, underwear and household items to the country. Sometimes, they don’t even have time to pee.

Meanwhile, they are not even treated well in the workplace. Amazon has yet to convince the world of its benevolence as an employer. Somehow, every time I listen to an Amazon executive, the only feeling it provokes is shivers.

Yet there is someone, somewhere, who still bothers to consider the lazy guy at home as me.

Many people say that brands are created by smart minds and weirdly dressed advertising agency employees.

Very often, however, it is the actions of individual employees that strengthen and even sometimes create a positive image for a brand.

If only all companies could treat their employees as if they understood that.
