KENMORE, Wash. – One of the pleasures of summer is car show in every corner, in every small town or big city in America. We have the best and biggest examples coming in the next few weeks – Monterey Car Week for the rich and famous, and Woodward Dream Cruise For the rest of us. But if you can’t travel to those places, you don’t have to go far to enjoy beautiful things. In my neighborhood this past weekend we held the All Britons Field Meet in Western Washington, a gathering of hundreds of people. You, WinMG, Lotus flower, JaguarAustin-Healeys, Land RoversMinis, Rolls-Royce and a few fine British motorcycles.
The arid lawns of the Lodge at St. Edwards is not like the shaded paths in pebble beach, but otherwise the experience is still the same. This show might lack champagne, but what do you expect when just $10 gets you access to millions of dollars in fruit and thousands of hours of labor and love shared by the owners proud of their neighbors. Seattle is a two-hour road trip from Vancouver, British Columbia, and the Commonwealth’s influence here is evident in many ways. On display are a variety from modest Minis or Midgets, to some wild MGB GT V8s, all the way up to a historic 1926. Bentley 6½ Liters, a 1938 Aston-Martins MG TA Supercharged Special and ultra modern. There’s an Allard, a rusty old Bentley, and the remains of a 1957 Arnolt Bristol, once owned by Mr. Air General Curtis LeMay’s force. When he couldn’t find a way to bomb the Soviet Union, he dropped bombs on Air Force runways in this rare condition.
