All about Jane Fonda’s three husbands



Daughter of Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda has been in the spotlight since she was a child. Curiosity about the young blonde’s love life began early and has only grown as she has made a name for herself as a two-time Oscar-winning actress, dedicated activist, and fitness mogul. And, there’s plenty to tell.

The multi-talented woman was rarely single for much of her life, with numerous romantic relationships creating a star-studded group of friends, including handsome actor Robert Redford, famous director Roger Vadim, politician Tom Haydenmedia mogul Ted Turner, music producer Richard Perry and soul musician Marvin Gaye. The star has walked down the aisle three separate times, marrying (and later divorcing) Vadim, Hayden and Turner. From flings to long-term relationships, the star has been very open about her relationships throughout her life.

Her candor won out when she turned 80, when she decided to call it quits. “I don’t date anymore, but I used to date until a few years ago. I’m 80—I closed up shop there,” she says. More in May 2018.

She reiterated this sentiment in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar Magazine in 2021: “I don’t want to be in a relationship, have sex anymore. I don’t have that desire.”

While it seems unlikely that Fonda will tie the knot again, read on for a look back at her three marriages, as well as other romantic relationships.

Roger Vadim (1968-1973)

Vadim was the actress’s first husband. They met in 1963, when the film director approached Fonda about remaking The Roundalthough she turned down his advances. They met again a few months later in December 1963, at Fonda’s 26th birthday party, and began a relationship soon after. The couple eventually collaborated on the 1964 film Barberella plantand married a year later, when Fonda was 28 and Vadim was 38. They welcomed a daughter, Vanessa, in 1968, but separated in 1973.

Fonda recalled what drew her to Vadim in her 2005 autobiography, Jane Fonda: My Life So Far“There is no doubt that part of my attraction to him and his life was because it was so different from the repressed style in which I had been raised,” she wrote. “But what a celebrity he was! In the early years of our relationship, walking down the Champs-Élysées, people would react to him as if he were a big movie star.”

Tom Hayden (1973-1990)

Fonda quickly moved on with Hayden, whom she married the same year her divorce from Vadim was finalized, in 1973. Fonda and Hayden first met in the early 70s “downtown at some theater,” she recalled in her 2018 documentary Jane Fonda in Five Acts.

“He put his hand on my knee and I felt an electric current go through my body,” she shared. She recalled telling her roommate at the time, “I think I’ve met the man I’m going to marry next.”

The two bonded over their shared devotion to activism. “The passion of our common involvement inevitably led us to join in our passion for each other,” the politician wrote in his 1988 memoir. The couple welcomed a son, Troy Garity, in 1973 and adopted a daughter, Mary Williams, Fonda said. make her feel “complete”.” Fonda’s marriage to Hayden was her longest, lasting 17 years. A year after splitting from her second husband, Fonda exchanged vows with Turner. They first met at a charity event in 1990, but things didn’t turn romantic until they were reportedly reintroduced by Fonda’s friend and former President Jimmy Carter.

She said Everybody in January 2023, “When I married him, I thought this was going to last forever.” However, they eventually split after a decade of marriage because Fonda realized she needed to put her own needs first.

“He needs someone to be there 100 percent of the time,” she told New Yorker of their 2001 divorce. “It wasn’t love, it was babysitting. We went in different directions. I grew up,” she added.

“He was charming. He was smart. He had two million acres by the time I left. It would have been easy to stay,” Fonda said in 2019. “But there was an angel on my shoulder…[saying]’If you stay, you will die without ever becoming the person you could have been. You will not truly be yourself.'”

Despite their split, Fonda still insists that the media mogul is her “favorite ex-husband.”

Despite three marriages, Fonda said she did not have a sexually satisfying relationship until she met music producer Richard Perry, whom she dated for eight years. They reportedly met after Fonda had surgery in 2009.

“When I had my knee replaced…I found a lover…when I moved in with him, I was still on crutches…we have never been apart since,” she said in a 2012 interview.

Fonda has given Sun some insight into their relationship: “At 74, I have never had such a fulfilling sex life. The only thing I have never known is true intimacy with a man. I absolutely want to explore that before I die. That happened with Richard, I felt completely safe with him. Often, when we make love, I see him as he was 30 years ago.”

After their split in 2017, Fonda said Us Weekly The couple are still in “constant communication” and “couldn’t be more friendly.”

Although they never dated, Fonda has spoken of the deep connection she had with Redford. The two starred in three films together as young adults, including the 1966 thriller The Clash1967 romantic comedy Barefoot in the parkand the West in 1979 The Electric Knight.

“I realized that I had grown up because in the last three movies, I was always in love with him,” Fonda told Ellen DeGeneres in March 2017, ahead of the release of their 2017 romance Our Souls at Night. “I love him every time.”

That same year, she told reporters, “I live for sex scenes with him. He’s a great kisser, so it was fun to kiss him in his 20s and kiss him again in my late 80s.”

Gaye was Fonda’s escapee, the actress revealed to New York Times in September 2020 that she turned down Gaye’s sexual advances because she was married at the time—something she recalled as her “big regret.” She added that she later learned the “Sexual Healing” singer had a picture of her on his fridge.
