AES Speed Cameras in Malaysia Updated – AWAS Setup Has New Pillar Design, Now Less Visible to Drivers

The current Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras found on highways in Malaysia are being updated to Autonomous Awareness Safety System (AWAS) with new hardware and an example of the new equipment was found installed along KM17.2 of the ELITE Expressway towards Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

This particular setup is the Ekin Spotter, a modular roadside furniture piece that can be assigned various functions through the installation of various modules. In this application as a speed camera, the Spotter is seen equipped with a speed sensor, white flashing lights, and a surveillance camera module.

The Ekin Spotter also has modules for city lights and beacons, audio speakers, antennas, and a WiFi hotspot. According to the Ekin website, the Spotter is capable of high-quality surveillance, day and night, and is capable of monitoring large areas and recording high-resolution video.

According to the company’s website, the Ekin Spotter is also capable of monitoring changes in its surroundings “using its own sensor technology” and can notify the central system in the event of unusual changes in conditions such as increased temperature, humidity, tampering or unauthorized intrusion.

In June last year, the Malaysian government announced its intention to to install additional AWAS cameras as it has proven to be very effective, with over 99% compliance rate recorded, according to the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS).
