Presidents Cup 2024 format and schedule: Teams, scoring, rules, dates, TV coverage, where to watch online

The 15th Presidents Cup tournament continues this week at the Royal Montreal Golf Club as the United States looks to continue its dominance of the International team in Canada. Entering this year’s tournament with a 12-1-1 overall record and a nine-game winning streak, the visitors appear to be looking to accomplish more of the same in the Great White North.

At least, that’s how the Presidents Cup started, with the Americans achieving just one of seven outright wins in Presidents Cup history on day one. The United States held a nearly insurmountable 5-0 lead with 25 games remaining going into the final three days in Canada.

While the US has hailed its long winning streak and brought players such as world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and world No. 2 Xander Schauffele to the negotiating table, the road problem has already become more difficult in recent years. This. After overcoming the International team in Korea, the United States advanced to the final day of the 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne before staging a memorable comeback in singles Sunday.

The red, white and blue will hopefully not come to that; not only does it bring two of the world’s top players to Canada, but it also features major champions such as Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Keegan Bradley and Brian Harman as well as Presidents Cup rookies Russell Henley and Sahith Theegala.

The Internationals, meanwhile, have their own firepower with strong players like Adam Scott, who will play in his 11th consecutive Presidents Cup hoping it will be the first of a series of winners. He joins familiar faces like Hideki Matsuyama, who had a stellar 2024 season, as well as Sungjae Im and Si Woo Kim, who both hold winning records in the competition.

There are players like Tom Kim, Min Woo Lee and Jason Day who are expected to make big contributions for the home team, but the X-factor is the three Canadian captain Mike Weir selected for his team. . Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners seek revenge for a poor debut at Quail Hollow in 2022, and they are joined by compatriot Mackenzie Hughes, who is set to make his home debut.

Format and rules of Presidents Cup 2024

Unlike the Ryder Cup, which takes place in four sessions over the first two days of competition, the Presidents Cup begins with one session on Thursday and one on Friday before ramping up play over the weekend. Golfers from the United States and International Teams will compete in a Four-ball (best ball) tournament on Thursday selected by the home team captain. On Friday, teams will switch to foursomes (rotating play). The busiest day comes on Saturday when the morning four-ball session will be followed by an afternoon four-a-side, table preparation for Sunday, which includes 12 one-on-one singles matches.

Below we break down each type of match you’ll see this week.

Four balls: Teams consisting of two people representing each side will compete against each other. Each of the four golfers plays his own ball, and the lowest score between two players on each team goes into the hole. Two points not selected will be eliminated.

Quartet: Teams consisting of two people representing each side will compete against each other. However, golfers must take turns hitting the same ball until it is holed. For example: If Player A tees off on hole 1, that means he will hit all of his tee shots on odd numbered holes and approach tee shots on even holes. Player B will tee off on all even numbered holes and play approach shots on odd numbered holes. More strategy is required here, as players teeing off on odd holes will hit tee shots on all four par 3 holes and second shots on both par 5 holes at Royal Montreal.

Single: Only played in the final round on Sunday. Singles consists of 12 one-on-one matches taking place throughout the day.

Score at the 2024 President’s Cup

Event: Each match is worth 1 point. Matches that end in a draw each receive 0.5 points. The first team to score 15.5 points over three days of competition will win the President’s Cup. If the 30 matches end in a 15-15 draw, both teams will share the President’s Cup.

Match: Each hole is scored independently with the lowest score winning. If both teams or players have the same score on a hole, that hole is considered a tie and there is no advantage.

As teams or players advance through the round, points can be accumulated or subtracted from the match total. For example: If Team/Player A wins the first two holes, they will lead 2 UP. If Team/Player B wins the third hole, Team/Player A’s lead will decrease to 1 UP.

Matches may end early if the winning team or player has a greater lead than the number of holes left to play. For example: If Team A is 4+ and has 3 holes left, they win the match 4&3.

Concessions: Unlike stroke-play golf, teams or players do not need to complete each hole. Shots (usually putts) may be conceded through sportsmanship if they are considered highly likely to be made or if attempting the shot would not result in a win or tie.
