Kia Stinger EV could be coming back – report

The power goes on and off. Kia Stinger The replacement seems to be happening again.

Kia was said to be working on a replacement model, codenamed GT1, before a report from South Korea this year said It will not eventually go into production.

Currently, Car A branded model like the Stinger is currently under consideration, according to Kia president Ho-sung Song.

It’s unclear whether this means development of the GT1 will continue or if Kia is hatching an entirely different model for the brand.

The GT1 is said to have progressed beyond the consideration stage, with Alliance production schedule leaked said last year that the product would go into production in South Korea in 2026.

The company will reportedly share its eM platform with Genesis models, just as the now-discontinued Stinger shares its platform with Genesis G70 – a model that Korean Car Blog said that it would not be replaced.

In its top-end guise, the GT1 is said to combine a 200kW front and 250kW rear electric motor to produce a total system output of 450kW, surpassing the EV6 GT’s 430kW.

The car also gets Kia’s largest battery ever, a 113.2kWh unit that can provide a range of 700 to 800km on an unspecified test cycle.

The GT1 is also expected to come in an all-wheel-drive configuration with two lower-power electric motors, including two 160kW electric motors, totaling 320kW, and a rear-wheel-drive configuration with a single 160kW motor.

For reference, the discontinued Stinger made 182kW with the base 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, 224kW with the not-here 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, and 274kW with the 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6.

Present, EV6 GT brings Kia a standout performance model.

Indeed, Kia released a promotional video in 2023 to celebrate the Stinger passing the performance torch to the EV6.

The Stinger was discontinued in 2023 after sluggish sales in markets like South Korea, Europe and the United States.

However, in Australia, the product sold better, even seeing a spike in sales in its final year on the market.

While Kia offers more expensive internal combustion engine models like the K9 full-size luxury sedan (aka the K900 and Quoris), as well as performance-focused models like the pro_cee’d GT, the Stinger is said to be the brand’s first global model.

With rear-wheel drive and a twin-turbo V6 engine, it’s the brand’s ambitious attempt to compete with more expensive German sports sedans, as well as attract owners of Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore performance sedans.
