Sarawak to receive first two hydrogen-powered automated tramway (ART) lines by year-end

The first two hydrogen-powered railless electric rapid transit (ART) for the Kuching public transport system expected to come to the East Malaysian city from China later this year, Sarawak MRT announced.

One of the first units, dubbed the ‘yellow train’ because of its yellow stripes on the outside, has been put into pre-commissioning at CRRC Zhuzhou Institute Company’s production base in Yibin, China, according to the report. Star.

Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said in a statement that 38 ART units are scheduled to arrive in Sarawak in phases starting this year. Of these, five will be delivered fully assembled, while the rest will arrive in the state as semi-assembled units over the next few years, Star reported

“I believe the whole world is paying attention to what we are doing in transforming the public transport system, especially our efforts in using clean energy, in this case green hydrogen,” Lee said, adding that efforts are being made to explore advances in hydrogen technology, especially in reducing the cost of producing green hydrogen for Sarawak’s public transport needs, according to the report.

According to StarThe latest ART railless electric vehicles have been upgraded from the prototype used for last year’s proof-of-concept exercise, and the vehicles are now capable of climbing grades of up to 10% and can be used in a variety of road conditions, reaching speeds of up to 80 km/h. They will also have dedicated areas for storing luggage, wheelchairs and folding bicycles.

ART will form the backbone of Kuching Metropolitan Transport System (KUTS)and the railless tram system will cover a total of 70 km of routes across three rail lines and 31 stations in the first phase. Revenue services are expected to commence in phases from the fourth quarter of 2025, starting with the Green Line (Line 1) from Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in central Kuching.
