Rome is considering a reservation system at the Trevi Fountain ahead of the Great Jubilee celebrations.

Tourists to Rome may have to make reservations to visit the Trevi Fountain as a way to tackle overtourism ahead of the city’s 2025 Great Jubilee celebrations, according to Roman officials.

According to reports from various sourcesThis week, Tourism Councilor Alessandro Onorato and Mayor Roberto Gualtieri told local Italian media that they are considering limiting the number of visitors to the fountain daily in preparation for the once-in-25-year event.

Throughout the year, Roman Catholics make pilgrimages to the Vatican in Rome — an event expected to attract more than 30 million people.

According to reports, a reservation system with fixed time slots and capacity limits for both the fountain and the surrounding steps is being considered.

Reuters reported that non-residents, including tourists, will be charged between $1 and $2 per visit; residents are not subject to this requirement. It is unclear when the system will be implemented, but Jubilee begins on December 24, 2024, and runs through January 6, 2026.
