Teen shot in Maryland, suspect arrested


Just two days after the shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, another gun-related incident occurred at Joppatowne High School in Maryland.

A shooting at Joppatowne High School in Harford County, Maryland has left a teenager dead and authorities have arrested a suspect.

The New York Times reported that the incident occurred shortly after noon on Friday, September 6, in a restroom at Joppatowne High School. Harford County Sheriff Jeff Gahler said police and the school principal broke up a fight in the restroom.

According to Fox Baltimore, the 16-year-old suspect allegedly shot a 15-year-old student with a single bullet. The teenage shooter eventually fled the school, but police later arrested him. WBALTV reported that police quickly found the 16-year-old boy at an apartment, but they have not yet recovered the weapon.

Authorities announced pending charges against the unnamed teenage suspect on Friday, The New York Times reported, adding that the suspect will be tried as an adult.

School nurses treated Warren Curtis Grant, 15, before airlifting him to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. However, doctors declared Grant dead after transfer.

Police Chief Jeff Gahler told The New York Times he was frustrated, especially after the recent tragedy at Apalachee High School.

“We all know about the horrific shooting that took the lives of four people in Georgia just a few days ago and now we are in Harford County witnessing a school shooting,” Gahler explained.

Joppatowne High School is located in Harford County, Maryland, about 20 miles northeast of Baltimore. The New York Times notes that the high school normally enrolls about 985 students.

Harford County Public Schools Superintendent Sean Bulson called the incident at Joppatowne High School extremely tragic and expressed his condolences to the victims’ families.

“We are heartbroken for the victim and the victim’s family, the circumstances are truly horrific and this should not happen in a school,” Bulson said.

Police Chief Gahler said authorities have been in contact with the 16-year-old suspect in more than a dozen incidents since 2022 and they are actively pursuing the investigation.
