2024 Tour Championship odds, picks, lineups: Surprising predictions from golf model that’s hit 13 majors

With an Olympic gold medal, two green jackets and two PGA Tour Player of the Year awards under his belt, Scottie Scheffler will be looking to add another achievement to his resume at the 2024 Tour Championship. The event will crown the FedEx Cup champion, with a runner-up finish in 2022 being Scheffler’s best finish to date. He started that year’s Tour Championship atop the leaderboard, and thus held a two-stroke lead, before losing to Rory McIlroy by a stroke. Scheffler is hoping to redeem himself at the 2024 Tour Championship, where he will again start with a two-stroke lead over Xander Schauffele.

The 2024 Tour Championship begins Thursday at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, with the first tee time set for 11:16 a.m. ET. Scheffler is the favorite at +110, with Schauffele second at +205. Hideki Matsuyama will start three strokes behind at +1200, according to the 2024 Tour Championship odds, while McIlroy (six strokes behind) is at +1800. SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS expert Mike McClure, has been wildly popular since the PGA Tour resumed play in June 2020. In fact, the model has raised more than $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, winning every tournament.

The model also won 13 majors over the weekend, including the 2024 Masters — its third consecutive Masters — and this year’s PGA Championship and US Open. Anyone who followed the model saw huge returns.

Now that the 2024 Tour Championship has been determined, SportsLine has simulated the tournament 10,000 times and the results are surprising. Visit SportsLine now for projected standings.

Top Predictions for the 2024 Tour Championship

The big surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Tour Championship: McIlroy (+1800), a 26-time PGA Tour winner and one of the top contenders, stumbled this week and didn’t even crack the top five. McIlroy had a pretty long run in the late spring/early summer over a seven-even stretch. He had back-to-back wins and five top-fives during that stretch, but he’s struggled on the PGA Tour since then. He missed the cut at The Open, finished 68th out of 70 golfers at the St. Jude Championship, and then tied for 11th a week ago at the BMW. Eleventh was also where he finished at the Tour Championship last year, based on his 72-hole score.

McIlroy starts the 2024 Tour Championship four under par, so he has a solid six strokes to clear to catch Scheffler. That’s a pretty big gap, considering McIlroy ranks just 67th on the tour in total birdies. He’s had plenty of birdie opportunities slip through his fingers because of his putter, as the Irishman ranks just 65th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting. Given his recent slump, strokes taken and struggles on the greens, McIlroy is a dimwit for 2024 Tour Championship bets. See who else to fade here.

Another surprise: Viktor Hovland, who is +6000, has made a strong run for the title. The reigning FedEx Cup champion will start eight shots behind at 2 under par. However, it’s a position the Norwegian is quite familiar with, having chased down then-leader Scheffler to win last year. Hovland not only won the 2023 Tour Championship with starting strokes in place, but also had the lowest score over 72 holes without staggered scoring.

Hovland has finished in the top 15 in all four of his starts at East Lake, based solely on his 72-hole score, and he finished fourth at the tournament in 2021. Additionally, Hovland won the East Lake Cup at the course in college at Oklahoma State, so few can match his success at the venue. He finished second two weeks ago in the first FedEx Cup playoff event, so he’s clearly stepped up his game this time of year and could move up the leaderboard this week. How to Pick the 2024 Tour Championship

The model also targets two other golfers at odds of 35-1 or better who will make a strong run for the title. Anyone who backs these long shots could be in for a big win. You can only see the model options here..
