Atari revives iconic racing gem with ‘Fatal Run 2089’ for Switch

Publisher Atari has announced that it will be reviving an iconic racing gem for the Nintendo Switch called Fatal Run 2089. Based on the original Deadly Run For the Atari 2600 and 7800, the game features car combat gameplay as you race across 20 tracks located in 4 separate global regions.

Developed by MNSTR Studio, the first trailer for Fatal Run 2089 shows off an apocalyptic wasteland where a number of Mad Max-inspired vehicles race through deadly tracks filled with lasers and explosions, while also battling enemy vehicles and even ferocious bosses.

It looks like a complete remake of the original title, although we’re interested to see what replayability features will be included to extend the game’s lifespan. 20 levels may not sound like much, but when augmented with point-based attacks, time trials, and online leaderboards, it could keep us busy for quite some time.

The original Fatal Run was released in 1990 by developer Sculptured Software. Released only in Europe at the time, it was known for its relative scarcity, although Atari re-released a cartridge of the game in other regions to coincide with the upcoming Atari 2600+ and Atari 7800+.

Let’s take a look at the key features of Fatal Run 2089:

– Race across four diverse terrains, each filled with branching paths, hidden shortcuts and explosive scenes that make every run tense and unpredictable.

– Face off against four formidable bosses, each with their own abilities and tactics to challenge your driving skills and push your strategic thinking to the limit.

– Conquer classic arcade style challenges where you race against time and manage the ARC’s decay. Fail to deliver the goods on time and you’ll have to restart the mission.

– Collect coins during your runs to upgrade your car with powerful upgrades. Customize your car with custom modifications to gain an edge in the toughest encounters.

– Choose from seven unique vehicle types, each with their own performance characteristics. Whether you prefer a nimble, agile ride or a powerful machine, your choice will shape your strategy. You can only choose one vehicle type per run, so choose wisely!

Fatal Run 2089 is currently scheduled to launch for Nintendo Switch in 2025.
