Fisker Ocean Recalled From Beyond the Bankruptcy Graveyard Over Regenerative Braking Issues
It’s been a long time since Fisker used to be discussed in a positive way, and unfortunately that remains unchanged to this day. EV Startup Goes Bankrupt issued a recall for 8,026 Ocean in the United States and Canada by a regenerative braking error when regen is active while driving over a speed bump. Fortunately, despite the pause in brake regeneration, owners have reported that normal braking functionality is not affected by the issue, so when regeneration is interrupted, they can still use the brake pedal to slow the Ocean’s roll. In another stroke of good fortune for unlucky Fisker Ocean owners, a fix for this brake regeneration bug will be released in an over-the-air software update. Fisker plans to notify owners by mail no later than October 14, but Ocean owners can always check to see if the OS 2.2 software update is available for their vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration actually began looking into this particular behavior in 2023, when a wave of owners submitted questionnaires to NHTSA explaining their experiences with the issue. NHTSA then opened a preliminary investigation into the allegations in January 2024, and Fisker has just issued a recall. The future looks bleak for EV startup Fisker, but it’s encouraging to know that the company hasn’t completely turned its back on the early adopters of its only vehicle.
