Volvo announced in 2021 that they will sell only electric cars starting in 2030But Automotive News reported last month that the automaker’s U.S. dealers are expected to still selling plug-in hybrid cars and 48-volt mild hybrids beyond that point. In that report, an unnamed dealer said “we’re going to have to, or we’re going to die.”

Volvo has incorporates plug-in hybrid vehicles into its EV product strategy more comprehensive than any other comprehensive automaker—even going further mask exhaust. Plug-in hybrid vehicle for the U.S. market with the longest electric range and highest fuel efficiency—S60 Recharge sedan—is being discontinued, but that reflects a decline in interest in sedans, not plug-in hybrids.

The all-electric EX90—a three-row SUV similar in size to the current XC90—was set to debut in 2022, but production for the U.S. market at Volvo’s South Carolina plant didn’t begin until earlier this year. The delay was due to software issues that, as of early August, had not been fully resolved. Volvo told customers at the time that the cars would arrive without certain features enabled, but that those features would be added after delivery via over-the-air updates.

More recently, the EX90 see price increase $3,300 which Volvo attributes to higher material costs. The base price is now $81,290 with a mandatory $1,295 destination charge. For comparison, Volvo currently lists Base price is $73,195 with the target being the upcoming 2024 XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid.
