Erica Mena Was Previously Criticized For Comments She Made Towards Spice

As The Shade Room previously reported, Mena faced backlash in August 2023. At the time, an episode of ‘Love & Hip Hop Atlanta’ aired in which Mena called her co-star, Spice, a “green monkey” in a heated exchange.

In the following weeks, Spice spoke out about the argument, letting fans know that she didn’t let Mena’s “opinions” detract from her.

“…Someone’s opinion of me doesn’t value me as a person and just because someone thinks something about me doesn’t mean I am that person,” Spice explained in an interview with Forbes.

During the chat, Spice also addressed Mena’s disdain for dark-skinned women.

“I always remind my dark skinned women how beautiful they are, to love themselves. [for] who are they [so] someone can’t come and say a few words,” she said. “…That doesn’t define me. I know who am i

In September of that year, Mena publicly apologized for her comments about Spice, according to The Shade Room. She also claimed that her comments were not “racially motivated.”

“I deeply regret my insensitive comment and humbly apologize to anyone I may have hurt or offended because of my thoughtlessness,” she told TMZ at the time. “My choice of words was poor and I take full responsibility for what I said. I am committed to listening to the voices of those affected and will work to make amends. As a black woman and mother of two black children, I want to make it clear that my use of the word was not racially motivated.”
