Source – Iowa assistant Kirk Ferentz suspended 1 game

State of Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant Jon Budmayr will be suspended one game for violations related to the recruitment of a transfer midfielder. Cade McNamarasources confirmed to ESPN.

Ferentz is the longest-tenured FBS coach in the country, having led Iowa since the 1999 season. Budmayr is the Hawkeyes’ quarterbacks coach after serving as a special assistant to Ferentz in 2023 and an offensive analyst in 2022.

The suspension is related to the NCAA investigation, sources said. Iowa opens its season on Aug. 31 at home against State of Illinois.

Ferentz is scheduled to speak to reporters Thursday afternoon to wrap up preseason training camp. The Athletic first reported the suspensions for Ferentz and Budmayr.

McNamara committed to Iowa on Dec. 1, 2022, just three days after entering the portal as a graduate transfer. He started Michigan in 2021 as the team won the Big Ten and reached the College Football Playoff but suffered a foot injury that kept him out for the season in the third game of the 2022 season.

McNamara struggled with injuries throughout his time at Iowa but opened the 2023 season as the Hawkeyes’ starter. Although Ferentz announced in July that McNamara was the starter, McNamara and Northwest transfer Brendan Sullivan competed for jobs in the camp.

Budmayr, a former State of Wisconsin midfielder, is the offensive coordinator at State of Colorado in 2021 before joining the Iowa staff.
