Women’s Open 2024 TV schedule, channel, wallet, live stream, where to watch when event returns to St. Andrews

While the Old Course at St. Andrews regularly hosts professional golf tournaments, it rarely hosts major championships. As we all know, there is a big difference between professional golf and major championships, and that will be on display this week at the St. Andrews Women’s Open, which will be held for the third time.

As the PGA Tour heads to Colorado for the second of three FedEx Cup Playoff events, attention in the golf world will be focused on the birthplace of what is perhaps the most famous golf course in Scotland, and perhaps the world, the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Let’s take a closer look at this event.

Expanding the women’s field, odds

This is the last major women’s tournament of the year and there are plenty of rising stars and big names to follow. Here are some of the favourites.

Nelly Korda (11-1): Korda has had a strange year. After winning six of seven events to start the year, she has struggled recently, failing to qualify for three of her last four events (excluding the 2024 Paris Olympics), including two major championships. Still, given her talent and track record, it’s impossible not to place the world No. 1 among the favorites.

Ayaka Furue (12-1): Furue picked up where Korda left off, winning the Evian Championship for her first major and finishing T3 at the Scottish Open. She has six top-10s in her last eight starts.

Ko Jin Young (20-1): Ko has 11 top-10 finishes at majors, including two top-3 finishes at this event, but she has not won since 2019.

Lilia Vu (22-1): Vu is the reigning champion of the event, having won at Walton Heath a year ago. She has three top-two finishes in her last seven starts at majors.

Lauren Coughlin (22-1): Coughlin may be the hottest player in the world right now. She’s won two of her last three starts — including last week’s Scottish Open — and finished in the top nine in all four. This has also been her best major year; she’s finished in the top five in two of the four majors she’s played.

Atthaya Thitikul (22-1)

Lydia Ko (30-1): Ko is recovering from her gold medal performance in Paris, but she has struggled in major tournaments of late. She has not won since 2016 and has not finished in the top 10 since 2022.

Truong Hong (January 30)

Lexi Thompson (70-1): Thompson is playing her final Women’s Open as she plans to retire at the end of the year. She has only finished in the top 10 once in 11 appearances at the tournament.

Women’s Expanding History

Surprisingly, only two women’s open golf tournaments have been held at the Old Course.

In 2007, Lorena Ochoa defeated Maria Hjorth and Jee Young Lee by four shots. It was her first major championship, and she won her second consecutive (and only) major the following year at the first major of the season, the Chevron Championship (formerly the Kraft Nabisco Championship).

Then in 2013, the last time the event was held at St. Andrews, Lewis defeated Na Yeon Choi and Hee Young Park by two lengths. with a crazy bird at Road Hole.

Women’s Open Course 2024

There are a couple of interesting storylines surrounding the Old Course this week. First up is something Geoff Shackelford mentioned a little deeper in his recent newsletter:”We can see Old’s strategy shine through thanks to the hitting distance that matches its design.”

The Old Course isn’t designed to withstand the onslaught of modern technology that men have come to embrace (Gordon Sargent hit the green on a par 4 at the Walker Cup a year ago). Perhaps it will have a chance to shine again this week in the women’s category. Hopefully.

The other storyline is simply golf. We see very little of it, and this is a great opportunity to get a glimpse of how it is played at its most exciting and elite level.

“It feels different,” said Vu, who won a year ago. “We’re in St. Andrews, where everyone wants to play. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There’s a little bit of pressure, but I think I know it’s going to be a battle for everyone, not just me. So I’m going to try my best, do my best here.”

Also, the weather looks interesting. Thursday’s forecast calls for temperatures in the 60s, rain, and winds anywhere from 10-40 mph. A real Open.
