Thai MP investigated for beating reporter

Thailand’s parliament has formally ordered an investigation into veteran politician and former army chief Prawit Wongsuwon after he beat a journalist last week.

Last week, the leader of the Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP) hit a ThaiPBS reporter on the head after she asked him a question about the new prime minister.

A PPRP spokesman said Prawit knew the journalist well and had apologised, saying he “teased her as someone he was close to”. Thai PBS has held Prawit “accountable for his alleged attempts to intimidate a reporter”.

The Thai Broadcast Journalists Association and the Broadcasting Council of Thailand have written to the speaker of the lower house to begin an investigation into whether Prawit’s actions violated the professional ethics of a member of parliament.
