Construction of Johor Bahru-Singapore high-speed rail line (RTS Link) has reached 83% completion as of the end of July this year and is on track to begin operations. January 1, 2027according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

“The installation of the RTS Systems Operations (RTSO) system is expected to be implemented by the end of this year. The completion of this rail infrastructure will also allow RTSO to commence system installation works including tracks, rolling stock, signalling systems and power supply and distribution,” Loke said at a recent press conference.

As reported by BernamaConstruction of the customs, immigration and quarantine (CIQ) complex at Bukit Chagar is also progressing on schedule, with the building’s substructure completed and building construction works currently underway. “The on-site installation of equipment and systems by the agencies that will operate at the CIQ complex is expected to commence in August 2025,” Loke commented.

Launched in 2018, RTS Link is a cross-border rail service that will carry 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction with a travel time of about five minutes between two stations: one in Bukit Chagar in Johor and one in Woodlands in Singapore. The project was put on hold in 2019 before resuming two years later in 2021.

Loke also revealed that the government is aware of the increasing traffic congestion in Johor Bahru, and his ministry will be working on a traffic diversion plan for the Iskandar Malaysia area. He listed Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Jalan Tebrau, Jalan Jim Quee and Jalan Tunku Azizah as access roads for vehicles entering the CIQ complex in Bukit Chagar.

“To address this issue, the government is prioritising investment of more than RM200 million in public transport infrastructure around Bukit Chagar, not only to meet current demand but also to take into account future developments,” he added.

The RTS Link, when operational, is expected to attract a large number of daily passengers, requiring additional public support facilities. As such, MRT Corp will build a new multi-storey Park & Ride car park at Bukit Chagar for RTS Link passengers with 1,500 parking bays. Through the agreement, Coronade Properties will also prepare an additional 781 dedicated car and motorcycle parking bays for RTS Link passengers at Coronation Square, 400 metres from Bukit Chagar station.

“A pedestrian bridge will also be built by Coronade Properties to directly connect Coronation Square to the CIQ complex, so that RTS Link users can enjoy this facility in the future. All the facilities built to complement the RTS Link service infrastructure will be carefully designed to ensure that passengers can enjoy a seamless travel experience from Malaysia to Singapore and vice versa,” Loke commented.
