The Constant Quicksand of Climate Alarmism – Watts Up With That?

The irony of the climate alarmists’ story is as rich as the verdant deserts they have never seen. Once upon a time, the world was supposed to be swallowed up by the ever-expanding Sahara, with desertification hailed as “the greatest environmental challenge of our time”. Back in the present, the alarmists have pivoted again, now worrying about the sudden verdancy of these same arid lands. It’s a classic case of the goalposts being moved, and one can’t help but chuckle at the sheer absurdity of it all.

The Great Panic About Desertification

Remember when desertification was the monster lurking in the shadows of climate change? The story was simple: human activity, coupled with rising temperatures, was leading to the relentless march of deserts across the globe. Poor farming practices and overgrazing were said to be turning fertile lands into barren wastelands. Alarmists painted a picture of a world where sand dunes would swallow up entire cities, and humanity would wander the earth like nomads in search of water. But then something funny happened on the road to doom. The deserts didn’t expand as predicted. In fact, many of them began to green up. Yes, you read that right. The very areas that were supposed to be parched and blasted are now experiencing a surge in vegetation growth. It’s almost as if Mother Nature decided to play a little joke on those who think they understand everything about her.

CO2: The Unexpected Hero

Enter carbon dioxide, the villain of the climate change story. For years, CO2 has been blamed for global warming. But in a Hollywood blockbuster twist, it turns out that the much-criticized gas is also a major contributor to the greening of the world’s drylands. As CO2 concentrations rise, so does the rate of photosynthesis, allowing plants to thrive even in some of the harshest environments. This phenomenon, known as CO2 fertilization, has led to increased plant productivity across vast swaths of dryland. Alarmists, of course, have not let this unexpected boon go unchallenged. Instead of celebrating the positive effects of CO2 on plant growth, they have shifted their focus to the potential downsides. They warn that excess vegetation can soak up scarce water resources, disrupt local ecosystems, and even increase the risk of wildfires. It was as if they were determined to find a cloud in every silver lining.

Pivot to focus on greening

With desertification no longer the existential threat it once was, climate alarmists are having to change gears again. Now the talk is about the potential dangers of greening. The fear is that as dry lands become greener, they could lose their unique biodiversity. Specialist species adapted to dry conditions could be replaced by faster-growing plants better suited to the new CO2-rich environment.

As we pump more CO2 into the air, the greening of drylands appears set to continue, according to two recent modeling studies. But ecologists warn that, despite appearances, the greening could have downsides for arid ecosystems and the people who depend on them. Desert plants and animals will often be lost, and the additional vegetation could soak up scarce water supplies.

Drylands cover about 40 percent of the planet’s land area. Deserts at their core are surrounded by vast expanses of grassland, dry forests and sometimes irrigated fields. They are home to more than a third of the world’s population and are among the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the world, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, an international organization of conservation scientists.

But let’s be honest: the greening of the deserts is not the disaster it is made out to be. In fact, it is a testament to the resilience of nature and the adaptability of ecosystems. Yet the alarmists seem intent on framing it as yet another crisis that requires urgent intervention. It is almost as if they cannot bear to think of a world where CO2 might actually have some benefits.

The never-ending cycle of alarmism

The irony of the situation is that the climate alarmist narrative is as adaptable as the ecosystems they claim to protect. When one crisis fails to materialize, they simply move on to another.

The world was mistaken in expecting that climate change would cause rapid and widespread desertification in the world’s drylands. In fact, the opposite is happening. But it would be equally foolish to imagine that the astonishing greenness now seen in satellite images of many of these lands is a reason to declare that their troubles are over.

It’s an endless cycle of doom and gloom, with each new threat fitting comfortably into their overarching narrative of impending disaster. But here’s the thing: the world is a complicated place, and nature doesn’t always follow the script. The green desert is a reminder that the Earth has the capacity to surprise us in ways we never imagined. It’s a lesson in humility for those who think they have all the answers, and a call to approach environmental challenges with a little more nuance and less hysteria. Ultimately, the irony of the climate alarmist narrative is that it often overlooks the resilience and adaptability that makes our planet so remarkable. Instead of constantly shifting the goalposts to fit a predetermined agenda, perhaps it’s time to acknowledge the unexpected ways nature can heal and thrive, even in the face of adversity. After all, the world is a greener place than we once thought, and that’s something to celebrate.
