This legendary name is looking to join Australia’s resurgent car industry

One of the most iconic names in the Australian automotive industry could re-enter the industry at a time when manufacturers are looking to carve out their own niche.

The Brabham family, whose patriarch Jack won three Formula 1 championships – including one in a car bearing his name – are heading to Australia to once again become a major player in local motorsport.

While you may know Brabham as the name associated with the track-only BT62 supercar, the family – now led by son David – has split from Adelaide-based carmaker Fusion Holdings. earlier this yearcarry the right to use the family title.

David, who has competed in 30 Formula 1 races and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, previously confirmed he had entered into talks to allow a new partner to trade under the Brabham name, after losing confidence in the BT62 project.

In a statement to the media confirming participation in the upcoming GT Festival at Phillip Island, Brabham said the focus was now on motorsport as the centrepiece of the brand’s recovery.

“Australian motorsport continues to grow and we believe the time is right for Brabham to return to its roots and assert its presence in motorsport in this country,” said Brabham.

“We are still discussing the shape of the event and while I am here I will assess my options and talk to the top teams, experts and influencers in Australian motorsport.”

Talk to by CarExpert Governor Paul earlier this yearDavid – who regained the rights to the Brabham family name after a lengthy and costly legal battle over BT62 – said he had spoken to a number of businesses keen to be part of the name’s future.

“You know, anything can happen in the future. Since we announced the end of the relationship (BT62) and made it public, we have been approached by a number of people… who are interested in what will happen next.

“So we’re just figuring out what ‘next’ is.

“Racing is part of our (Brabham) DNA.

“We have a plan, we are currently talking to people who have shown interest in the next chapter of Brabham.”

Fusion Capital, the maker of the BT62 supercar, has yet to make any further announcements since confirming its split from the Brabham family earlier this year.
