Afterward #1 And #3 The naturally aspirated fifth-generation smart – its biggest model to date – will finally be fully revealed in two weeks’ time on August 28, four months after the concept version debuted at Auto China in Beijing. The boxy electric SUV will be a far cry from its jelly-like siblings, both in design and size.

The #5 is billed as the “Contemporary Explorer”; hence the Geely-Daimler joint venture’s choice of Australia as the world premiere location, thanks to Down Under’s strong road trip culture. Although the #1 and #3 haven’t even been launched there yet – they only go on sale next month.

In any case, the look of the #5, once again created by Mercedes-Benz, is said to be a continuation of smart’s “Sensual Producty” design language, albeit much more angular than previous models. Despite the camouflage on the prototypes shown, the resemblance to the Concept #5 is clear and includes square headlights and taillights connected by a transparent strip, pill-shaped front and rear light modules, prominent flanks, a vertical glass window and a crease line from the window line leading to the vertical D-pillar.

It looks like the #5 will also be optioned with the concept’s beefy front and rear fenders, although the production version will clearly be inferior to the suicide doors on the show car. Of course, the exterior design has already been revealed in a filing with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), revealing flat-faced aerodynamic alloy wheels on the regular model and four-spoke turbine-style elements on the Brabus.

Expect the interior to largely mirror the concept, incorporating a rectangular dashboard and a large array of screens – including a 13-inch OLED infotainment touchscreen in the middle and ahead of the front passenger. Also previewed are Nissan-style “zero gravity” seats with an “industry-first” cushion airbag and a built-in booster seat on the passenger side.

While the #1 and #3 are B-segment SUVs, the #5 is firmly in the C-segment. The aforementioned MIIT filing lists a length of 4,705 mm, a width of 1,920 mm, a height of 1,705 mm and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm, meaning the car is actually larger than the Honda CR-V. It’s certainly no fortwo, but despite that, the #5 will only be offered as a five-seater – at least for now.

The filing also lists four powertrain options, starting with a single-motor rear-wheel-drive model with either 340 PS (250 kW) or 363 PS (267 kW) – depending on the engine – and a regular twin-motor all-wheel-drive variant that makes 587 PS (432 kW). Topping the range is the hot Brabus with a whopping 646 PS (475 kW).

In terms of battery, the #5 is set to feature 76 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and 100 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) packs that smart claims will deliver a range of up to 550 km according to WLTP ratings. The 800-volt electrical architecture also enables fast DC charging, which can charge the battery from 10 to 80% in just 15 minutes.
