BMW M5 Touring: Super wagon spotted just days before launch

BMW’s latest hot hatch is expected to be officially revealed later this week, but our European spy photographers have spotted a (barely) camouflaged M5 Touring undergoing final testing in Europe.

It’s been 14 years since the last time M5 The wagon has rolled off the production line, but the long-roofed performance model will ditch the V10 engine of its predecessor and instead use the V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain from its sedan sibling.

Ahead of its August 15 debut at Pebble Beach during Monterey Car Week, the next-generation M5 Touring has been spotted testing in Germany on roads near the infamous Nürburgring.

These photos are the best we have of the new model so far and they may also be the last before the car’s official launch.

The new M5 Touring will likely be powered by the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged plug-in hybrid V8 as the M5 sedan.

This engine alone produces 430kW of power and 750Nm of torque, although a gearbox-mounted electric motor brings the total output to 535kW and 1000Nm.

The PHEV M5 is one of the most powerful BMWs ever made, but it’s also one of the heaviest, weighing in at 2,435kg in sedan form, and that figure is expected to rise even higher for the M5 Touring.

In the sedan version, power is sent to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, BMW says the car can accelerate from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds.

With an 18.6 kWh lithium-ion battery, the M5 sedan’s electric-only range is limited to 69 km. WLTP fuel consumption ranges from 1.6 l/100 km to 10.3 l/100 km depending on the battery charge level.

All M5 sedans delivered to Australia will include the M Driver’s Package, which increases top speed from 250km/h to 305km/h.

Standard equipment for Australian-spec cars includes adaptive suspension, an M carbon fibre exterior package and 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels.

The interior features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an 18-speaker surround sound system, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel.

Prices for the 2025 M5 start at $259,900 before on-road costs, while the Touring trim will likely be a bit more expensive.
