It’s mid-August, which means it’s time to take a look at the future of video games with the upcoming Gamescom 2024 event.

As usual, the festival will kick off with Gamescom Opening Night Live in Cologne, Germany, where regular host Geoff Keighley will reveal new trailers and information about some of the biggest games coming out in the near future.

In this guide, we’ll tell you when the Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live event is, where you can watch the event, and what Switch news you can expect to see during the event.

Gamescom 2024 opening night is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, August 20, 2024. You can find all the different time zone information below:

  • North America – 11am PDT / 2pm EDT
  • UK – 7pm BST
  • Europe – 8pm CEST
  • Australia – 4am AEST (23 August)

Where can I watch Opening Night Live?

As usual, the Gamescom Opening Night Live presentation will air on the Game Awards. YouTube channel and it Convulsion channel.

However, like previous events, we’ll be streaming this event live right here on Nintendo Life, so if you want to watch the event and chat with other community members (and even some of us!), be sure to tune in at the designated time to join in.

How long is the live opening night?

We’re not sure how long Opening Night Live will last, but based on previous events, we’re guessing it will be around 2 hours, maybe sooner or later.

Is Nintendo Attending Opening Night Live?

Not likely. Nintendo has confirmed that they won’t be attending Gamescom in general, so we’re confident they won’t be attending the Opening Night Live presentation either.

Also consider what’s coming next. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is still a little over a month away from launch at the time of writing, and it’s just received a pretty comprehensive trailer from Nintendo itself. We can’t expect to see the Big N introducing things like Donkey Kong Country Returns HD or Metroid Prime 4: Beyond at Gamescom if the company is not at the show, so it is safe to assume that the company will not appear on Opening Night Live.

What games will be shown on Opening Night Live?

Just because Nintendo won’t be at Gamescom doesn’t mean there won’t be any Switch games. Sure, the event will mostly feature PS5 and Xbox Series X|S games, but we’re sure a few Switch games will pop up here and there.

So far, Geoff Keighley has confirmed the following:

Sega is known to have made appearances at Keighley events, with Sound superstar was introduced at last year’s Gamescom ONL event. Then there’s a chance we might get a glimpse of the upcoming event. Sonic X Dark Generation for Switch at this year’s event.
