Car News Ram said production of the DS-series model, known as the 1500 Classic in the United States, will end this spring, though U.S. sales will continue through 2025.

Ram is now offering the former DS-series model in the sole 1500 Express Crew Cab variant in Australia, alongside a host of other DT-series models.

The DT range has been revealed with a new look, ditching the venerable Hemi V8 in favour of a turbocharged inline-six, but despite being revealed last November, Ram Trucks Australia has yet to confirm when it will be available here.

The older DS-series 1500, dating from 2008, already in full run mode by 2023. The event coincides with the launch of a new, more affordable model in the DT line, the Big Horn.

Currently, both generations of the 1500 are offered in Australia with V8 engines, but the DS-series Express doesn’t get the eTorque mild-hybrid system of the DT models.

The facelifted 1500 will ditch the V8 in favour of a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six petrol engine.

The standard Hurricane six produces 313kW and 636Nm of torque, while the high-output version produces 402kW and 706Nm.

No V8 will be offered in the updated range, even in the US. This is the latest pickup to drop the V8, following Toyota Tundra.

The Ford F-150 Offered exclusively in Australia with a twin-turbo V6, however a version with a pair of V8s may still be available in North America.

Overseas, the updated 1500 will also continue to offer the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 petrol engine, which has never been fitted to a Ram in the Australian market.

There’s also a new Ramcharger model, which uses a range-extending powertrain. It also has the Pentastar V6, but it’s used to power an onboard 130kW generator, which then powers the electric motors.

The Ramcharger is equipped with a 92kWh battery pack and Ram claims a total power output of 487kW and 834Nm of torque.

Ram also introduced the 1500 REV, an all-electric pickup truck to compete with the Ford F-150 Lightning.

The current DS and DT 1500 series in Australia remain the best-selling models in their segment, with 1959 units sold up to the end of July this year.

However, the number of vehicles in the 1,500 range fell 50.8 percent year-on-year. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is gradually narrowing the gap with 1,384 vehicles sold in the same period, up 23.7 percent.

Ram also has to worry about the Ford F-150, which has sold 1,132 units this year.
